Dr. Michael Westaway
Physical Therapist, MSc, DSc, FCAMPT, APP
Dr. Mike Westaway is a licensed Physiotherapist and a Certified Clinical Specialist in Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy, with 38 years of clinical experience. He is one of only 26 Physical Therapists in Canada to attain the prestigious “Specialist” designation in this field.
Dr. Westaway also practices as an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP)—a role similar to that of a Nurse Practitioner, though he is not a medical physician. In this advanced capacity, he is authorized to order diagnostic tests such as X-rays, MRIs, and ultrasound imaging.
In 1993, Dr. Westaway successfully completed both his Residency and Fellowship examinations in Manual Therapy through the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapists. He later went on to serve as an Adjunct Clinical Professor at McMaster University, teaching Orthopaedics. As part of his APP role, Dr. Westaway works under a Medical Directive to perform ultrasound-guided trigger point and Prolotherapy injections, having completed specialized training through the American College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He is the only Physical Therapist in Western Canada to hold this designation and currently collaborates with Dr. Louie Coetzee, MD at Beam Radiology in Canmore. In recognition of his contributions to the profession, he was recently awarded the CPA Medal of Distinction, honouring the top 100 Physiotherapists in the 100-year history of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
Michael first built a home in Canmore 25 years ago, later moved to Calgary, and has recently returned to the mountains. He lives with his wife Myra, his partner of 35 years, and together they enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle. They have two grown children: a son (28) and a daughter (31).
